How to choose: look for regulation height (34 in at the center, 36 in at the posts), a sturdy metal frame, and a carry bag for transport. Add a set of outdoor balls and a couple of paddles and you've got everything for pickup games.
A regulation net spans the full 20-foot width of the court, with posts just outside the sidelines, for a total length of about 22 feet. It stands 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the centre. Most portable nets are designed to match these measurements.
A portable net is light, quick to set up and easy to store, which makes it ideal for driveways, gyms and recreational play. A tournament net, like the Franklin Official Tournament Net, is built for permanent posts on dedicated courts and offers a tighter, more official feel for clubs and facilities.
Most portable nets set up in a few minutes without tools: unfold the frame, connect the sections, attach the net and adjust the tension. After a couple of setups, it goes quickly. Everything packs back into its carry bag for storage or transport.
It's best not to. Sun, rain, snow and freezing temperatures wear out the net and frame faster, especially during Canadian winters. Take your portable net down after play and store it dry and indoors to make it last longer.
