Outdoor pickleballs are harder and slightly heavier than indoor balls, with about 40 smaller holes. That design helps them hold their line in the wind and bounce consistently on concrete and asphalt. Popular outdoor balls include the Franklin X-40 and FS Pro Outdoor; the Onix Fuse G2, Pure 2 and Dura Fast 40; the Head Penn 40 and Pro Penn 40; and the Gamma Photon Outdoor. The Franklin X-40 and Dura Fast 40 are among the most widely used balls in outdoor play. Choose the ball your club or league uses so you practise with the same bounce.
All hard plastic balls become more brittle in the cold, which is common in Canadian spring and fall. Keep your balls at room temperature until you play, store them in your bag rather than a cold car, and rotate a few balls during play so none stays cold too long. Many players also keep a multi-pack on hand, since cracks are more likely when it's chilly. When it gets too cold, move inside with indoor pickleballs.
Choose a colour that contrasts with your court and surroundings. Bright optic yellow is the most common choice and stands out on most blue and green courts, while pink or orange can be easier to see against yellow walls, trees or busy backgrounds. Most indoor facilities and leagues use indoor pickleballs, which give a softer, more controllable game.
